Summary: Once upon a time, Donghae got lost in the mountains.
Once upon a time I got lost in the mountains.
Once upon a time I used to spend the 3 months of heat (also known as summer) at my grandparents' home way up in the mountainsides. Apparently, I don't have anything better to do, so I go to the mountains, which is said to be a mountain of the gods. Being there was like being in a maze, you get confused to where you go and in the end you get lost. Well, same goes for me. I got lost. I frantically ran around to find a way out, but I was too exhausted after a short while. I pulled my silky brown hair out of frustration, my body filled with fear; and since I was only a mere child back then, I started to convulse and cry. Then he appeared in front of me.
"Hey kid, you got a problem? Need help?" I looked at a masked man with tears in my eyes. His whole face was covered with a weird cat-mask; one that you wear during those Japanese festivals and stuff. The only thing that was visible was his lustrous, short black hair. He wore a yukata, and by the way he talked, it was like he really knew this place. I quickly launched myself at him, not caring if I knew him or not. What matters most is that he is my savior.
"YOU CAME TO SAVE ME!!!" I tried to hug him out of relief. But he evaded me, which resulted in my landing on the floor, flat on my face. "Omo. Why," I started to sob again, "did you do that?" I got up and placed both my hands on my hips, pouting. "You're a meanie!"
Instead of helping me up, he laughed. “Sorry, kid. You’re a child of a human, are you not? He started to take something from the inside of his yukata. “Here,” he said, and he brought out a dirty-white stick. “this will help you stand up.”
Out of my stubbornness, I deeply frowned, and instead of grabbing this offered stick, I whacked the thing off of my face and instead caught his hand. Or at least tried to.
He evaded me, AGAIN. This is getting annoying, AGAIN. I landed flat on my face, AGAIN. I frowned and started to cry, AGAIN.
I glared at him. “Why do you keep dodging me?!” I shouted on top of my lungs (which was not that loud since I was only six years old).
“Well,” he started, and I couldn’t tell if he was smiling or frowning or crying or pouting because he was still covered with a mask. “I’m not human. I’m a monster and I live in this forest.” I stared, no, gawked at him. “I shall disappear once a human touches me. Meaning, I’d die.”
I couldn’t hide my excitement. I jumped up and down (like a screaming fangirl meeting Super Junior face to face). “OMO! You’re my first monster friend, ahjussi!” Forgetting what he just said, I ran to hug him.
And you all know what happened next.
“Hey, hey.” He shook his head. “You forgot what I just said. And another thing, kiddo,” he started to take off his mask, revealing a very handsome-looking monster. “I’m not an ahjussi.” He smiled, and the whole universe seemed to conspire and just focus on that upping of lips that made the entire scary mountain-forest, beautiful.
I must have gazed at him for too long because I was shocked when he suddenly appeared in front of me (with those chocolate-brown eyes as big as saucers). “Anyways, you’re lost, right? Hold on to this,” he extended the stick. “I’ll lead you out of this forest.”
Once upon a time my first monster friend stopped my crying and helped me out of the forest. After 10 minutes of him dragging my lithe (and tired) form, we finally found the way out.
“Here we go, kid. Just go straight and you’ll be able to get out.” He smiled, and I tried hard not to gawk again. “Don’t ever go back here again, okay? This place is really dangerous.”
As he turned around, I blurted out, “Wait!” he looked back at me, his eyes shining and smile glowing. “What’s your name?”
“Kibum.”
“Kibum,” My lips and my fingertips met as I murmured his name. “I’ll come back here tomorrow!” I then waved goodbye and started to climb down the flight of stairs. “Bye, Kibum!”
“Bye, Donghae.”
I was stunned that he knew my name, so I stopped on my tracks and turned around, but he was gone. Suddenly, someone tapped my shoulder before I was flung in the air. “Donghae! Where did you go to?” I looked down to see my grandfather carrying me, with my grandmother by his side. “We were worried sick.”
“I’m so sorry, grandpa, grandma.”
“That’s fine. We’re just glad you’re safe.”
I blinked, and I tried to absorb the situation that just happened earlier. I got lost. I met someone with a I-can-kill-you-with-just-this smile. And not just someone- a monster, to boot. “Grandpa? Is it true that monster live in the mountains?”
My grandfather looked nostalgic. “Well, I remember during my younger days, I hear music, like some sort of festival is taking place. But, the people never held festivals in the mountains. So we’re guessing the people there are monsters.” He cupped his chin, “I remember a friend of mine got lost in there once, and he said that there were lots of people with masks on. I didn’t believe him, though. Anyway, let’s go, my child.”
Once upon a time I was excited to wake up to a new day. I quickly dressed up, and told my grandparents that I would go out to walk for a while. Be careful, they said, and I headed to the mountains.
“Hey, kiddo!” Even though I don’t know where Kibum was yet, I beamed, because I was looking forward to his smile. When I finally found the source of his voice, I frowned. He was wearing his cat mask. “What’s the matter? Why are you frowning so early in the morning?”
“Take off your mask!”
“And why would I?”
He seemed to take pleasure from my disappointment. “Well, I want to see your face. Why do you wear that ugly thing, anyway?”
He laughed, heartily. “Because without this, my face wouldn’t be something you could call a monster.”
“You’re weird!!!”
Once upon a time my summer days always ended with me being happy. Although it was trivial, I never get to touch him. I always try to jump him, but to no avail. I always land on the floor with a thud. That jerk. I was only a child!
Once upon a time I was sad because this was the last day (this year) that I get to visit Kibum. “I’m sad, Kibummie!”
“Why, Hae?”
“Well… this is the last day we’ll see each other. Aren’t you sad?” I pouted when I didn’t get a response from him. I was about to wail when he suddenly spoke up.
“But you’re still coming back next summer, right?” He turned to look at me with his 5000-megawatt smile.
I grinned like a maniac, “Of course!”
Once upon a time I couldn’t wait for summer to come. It was the only time of year that I was looking forward to. Next summer, and the summer after, and the next, and the next, there was never a day that I missed seeing him. I’m 21 years old now (and he still looks like 22), and I withstood 15 years of not touching Kibum. Don’t get me wrong, I’m completely happy just being with him, but somewhere deep inside me, I had a slight wish that he was human.
"Time flies really fast, huh? You're getting pretty old." I smiled and looked at the source of the supposed to be insult, my eye almost meeting his. Compared to a human, he ages really slowly.
“Yeah, and you’re still the same, Kibummie.”
Once upon a time he said, "Hae, I really want to touch you. To kiss you. To hug you. To melt with you." I was stunned by the declaration; it was so unexpected. I widened my eyes, and tears began to fall.
"Me too, me too. But please, don't touch me, ever. I don't want you to disappear. Please. I want you to stay. I want to remember you forever." I wanted to hug him, so bad... One day, time is going to separate us. But until then, let’s stay together (forever).
Kibum shook his head. “No, Hae.” He clutched his hands into fists. “Please don’t. Can’t you see?” the brims of his eyes stated to get filled with tears. “I’m fragile, Hae. I could disappear anytime. It’s like I don’t exist. So, please, not too much.”
Once upon a time I did nothing but breakdown and cry.
Once upon a time, Kibum invited me to some kind of festival, the next summer. Of course, I agreed. We sat by a riverbed. Yes, a riverbed. You really don't know what to expect when you're so deep in the mountain-forest. “I missed you.” He placed his mask on, and kissed me on the cheek.
"Hey, watch out!" He pulled a kid that almost fell in the river, if it wasn't for him who took the kid's hand. I bid goodbye to the kid, but when I looked at him, he began to disappear. He stared at his fingers, wide-eyed, but then he started to smile. He extended his hand. "That kid... was a human. Come," he said. "I can finally touch you."
I immediately ran to him, and I hugged him as tight as I could. "I love you. So much, Kibummie. So much.”
"I love you, too, Hae. I’m so happy that I was able to touch you." I didn’t care whether it hurt so much because he was clutching my waist so tight. The feeling of euphoria inside overpowered the physical ache outside.
And in a flash, he was gone.
Once upon a time I picked up his mask. I smiled, both from my happiness and heartbreak. I just know that I wouldn’t be as excited as I was during the past 15 years whenever summer’s around. But the warmth of his body pressed to mine, and the memory of every summer spent with him will stay with me forever.
And I believe that our story is like a fairytale. Which, hopefully, will be passed on for generations and generations. And someday, when it’s time to tell the whole world about us, it will begin like all fairytales do:
Once upon a time...
Notes: I got the plot somewhere. ;-; I forgot. Guh. I am so poor at this. D: And by the way, the last paragraph is from “Eleven Minutes”. <3 Comment? :3
